Arsenal 2 Middlesbrough 1: After taking the lead through Noel Whelan, Boro went down 2-1, after Arsenal struck twice in the second half. The result leaves Boro a point off the bottom of the league.

Newcastle 1 Chelsea 2: An Alan Shearer goal wasn't enough to give Newcastle victory. Newcastle now go to second following Arsenal's win over Boro.

Ipswich 5 Sunderland 0: 4 goals in the first 30 minutes, and 1 in the second half, condemmed Sunderland to a 5-0 drubbing.

Division 3

Bristol Rovers 1 Darlington 0: A Nathan Ellington goal 5 minutes from time gave Rovers the win.

Hartlepool 3 Orient 1: Gordon Watson (4), Paul Smith (37), Mark Tinkler (86) all struck to give Pools a 3-1 win.
