Newcastle star Craig Bellamy has spoken for the first time about the club’s recent shame in Spain, as four players preferred to go drinking than attend a benefit dinner for Magpies’ legend Sir John Hall.

Bellamy was among the quartet who shamed the club, but he has now broken his and the rest of the players’ silence over the matter.

"We acted like boys but were treated like men and I'm very thankful for that," said the former Coventry man.

"I learned a lesson and I realise I should have turned up for that dinner.

"The manager was right to do what he did and I know I've let myself down - it won't happen again.

"I felt sorry for Kieron but because he's an England international, everything he does is big news."
